On Friday I stayed home from work to do a "flush" per doctors orders (hope that's not TMI). I did not know how long it would take so I took a day off when I knew I could be home alone and have a day of relaxation. I did some blogging and watched a couple chick movies that I knew Chris would not like. First up was Pitch Perfect that I really enjoyed. If you like Glee, see this movie. If you don't like Glee, skip it. The second movie I watched was Young Adult which really depressed me, but I could not bring myself to turn it off. Charlize Theron plays a woman named Mavis probably in her mid 30's who just got divorced. She sits around all day working as a ghost writer, watching reality TV with her dog, drinking and eating bad food. I could totally see this happening to me if I were suddenly alone! After the movie I couldn't sit and watch TV anymore, I had to get up and do something...so I cleaned the house. I was not going to be Mavis...even for one day!!!
On the bright side, the movie had some great songs from the 1990's in it. Mavis sings this one over and over again and it has been in my head ever since. It's called "The Concept" by Teenage Fanclub.

I made it through another January and February! Yipppeee!!!! As you all know, I hate the cold weather and winters here in Virginia. March is the point where emotionally I believe winter is over and good times will be here again. I suffer a bit from the winter blues each year but this year was not so bad since it was the first year where I recognized it and tried to do something about it rather than wallowing in it. Soon there will be the smell of mulch in the air and my husband will be glued to the TV watching March Madness. There will be a sprinkling of nice days where everybody wants to be outside and on their decks. Daffodils will start popping out of their winter homes. I know it is still technically winter and a big snow storm is brewing for next week but as Barry Manalow said, "looks like we made it".
Taylor Momsen, aka Jenny or "Little J" on Gossip Girl, thinks she's all grown up. She went from being a typical pretty blond girl to channeling Cherie Currie from the Runaways. Taylor is now the lead singer for a band called The Pretty Reckless which I didn't take seriously until I saw that they played at the Montreux jazz festival this year, not that her band has anything to do with jazz though. I've always liked girls who can rock and Taylor definitely can! I think she's an idiot away from the stage with her attitude and thinking she's so grown up, but I checked out her music on You Tube and actually like some of it.
Note that they are both 16 or 17 in these pictures. The Runaways crashed and burned after being together only 3 years. Let's hope Taylor doesn't have the same fate.
I think it's time for me to try watching Glee. I admit I may have thought some negative things about the show based on the premise, but I've recently been watching some of the performances on You Tube and like those so I'm going to give the show a shot. Hopefully all the parts in between the singing is as entertaining as the songs.
Watching Slash on the Grammys just reminded me of something funny from college. I lived in a small college town that was about 1 square mile just on the edge of the campus and it was all apartments with students. Nobody else lived there since it was known as a "student ghetto" and usually smelled like stale beer. It wasn't bad at the time. Sure, I wouldn't live there now but it was great living with all my friends nearby and nobody ever complained about noise...except a couple times. Some annoying neighbor girls didn't like it when my roommate and I decided to have a little BBQ (smores) at 2am during finals week. Another wasn't aimed at me...a guy across the street decided to play November Rain on repeat ALL NIGHT LONG! I didn't mind as I was usually up really late back in those days, but somebody left a note on his door saying something like "although I really like November Rain, I didn't want to hear it ALL NIGHT". It was really loud. LOL. What's even funnier about this story is that the guy was total player...and years later ended up marrying one of my friends who was one of the straightest people I've ever known. She tamed him and now they are happily married with a baby girl.
I've been listening to the 70's satellite radio channel on the TV lately and I forgot how much I love some of the music from the 70's. True, I was a wee tyke back then, but I have fond memories of wearing a tube top, short shorts, knee high socks (you know, with the stripes!) and being really tan because I was outside all day. Oh and I loved to roller skate around my back yard pretending I was a Solid Gold dancer on roller skates. I listened to music on a little radio in my room or my parents would blast their 8 tracks thru the house. This was a simpler time when kids were able to wander and play with no shoes on and we didn't worry about things so much.

The boys in No Doubt really owe Gwen a lot. If Tony didn't break Gwen's heart, then this band would never have been successful, but it really is all her. The funky Gwen is back for the No Doubt tour! Here is the video from the Today Show. They will also be performing on American Idol on May 6 and Gossip Girl on May 11 (will they be the prom band???).
I love Katy Perry and everyone knows how much I love Vegas, so this is perfect!
Here is what she said about the song. "Vegas gives me that 'what the f--- feeling.' It's really close to LA so one night you could be having a beer with your friends and, when you wake up, you're in Vegas."
This makes me miss living so close to Vegas. Not that flying across the country is a big deal to me, but it takes a little more planning than just getting in the car.
Britney's new video came out over the weekend. It debuted on 20/20...well, MTV doesn't play music anymore so I guess 20/20 will do. I remember MTV in the early years when a new video was a big deal. Anyway...she looks great and seems to have old Britney energy back. I don't like the song, but the video is good...a lot like Toxic from a few years ago where where she goes through different persona's after a man.
Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis has been a favorite song of mine all summer. And..it was the song for one of my favorite dances on So You Think You Can Dance.
Sweet home Alabama...where the skies are so blue...
I heard Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd blaring on a car radio today. This song reminds me of my trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras when I was around 23 or 24 years old. We heard this song numerous times on the trip so it still to this day reminds me of Mardi Gras. For some reason I thought the weather would be warm since it was on the Gulf Coast, even though it was February, but it was about 40 degrees and raining the first night. We were wet and cold most of the time, but that didn't stop the fun.

I am starting something new that I just made up called Music Monday. Each Monday I will post a music video and either write about the song or a memory the song evokes. I think music more than anything else can bring you back to certain time or memory.
I have always liked the song "I Don't Like Mondays" by the Boomtown Rats and it is actually quite a serious song. It is about a teenage girl in 1979 who went on a shooting spree at an elementary school playground. She killed two adults and injured eight children. She showed no remorse and when asked why she did it, she said, "I don't like Mondays".
