Dress You Up Cold Hearted Snake

Glee played to my love for 80's music tonite!  In case you missed it, here are the originals.

Remember dressing up like Madonna???

And let's pay tribute to Paula Abdul before she went all crazy.  Despite what anyone thinks of her today, she was a huge pop star and obtained a level of success most only dream of.  Let's remember her at her high point.  After all, she dated Arsenio Hall, MARRIED Emilio Estevez...and brought us MC Skat Kat!

The TV Hiatus

Why do TV shows go on "hiatus" so often?  It really ruins the flow of a show.

They only work part of the year to start with and then two or three times a year there is a month or so break.  I don't get these kinds of breaks so why should they?  I am lucky to get 5 weeks vacation a year but it is a struggle to get it all in because nobody does my work while I am gone so I usually end up working extra late nights and weekends before and after a vacation to make up for it.  Oh and I can only take one week at a time.  What I would give to be able to take two or three weeks off at once!  Only twice since I started working after college have I had a two weeks off.  The first time was for when I got married (10 years ago) and the second time was when I was in between jobs and moving from CA to VA (8.5 yeas ago).  So although I had two weeks off, packing and moving was not much of a vacation.

I wonder if TV shows lose viewers who do not come back after a hiatus?  I would much prefer a shortened season that goes straight through.  Even on holidays...we all have DVR's now so we won't miss it.

2013 Grammys

A dress code memo?  No flesh?  This is the Grammy's!  It is supposed to be the best outfits and best music of the awards season.  I thought both missed the mark.  Or am I just too difficult to please these days?

My favorite moment of the show was J.Lo's entrance with the massive slit.  Then her comment about how she "got the memo" and then the other guy said she "inspired the memo".

Did anyone else notice Beyonce's reaction to J.Lo?  She was like "whaaaat...I could have worn that?".  Instead she chose pants...yes, PANTS...to the Grammy's.  I realize Middle America Mothers Against Leotards (MAMAL) did not appreciate her Super Bowl attire, but there is something in between a PETA hating snake/iguana skin leotard and a pants suit that you would wear to lunch.  It's called a dress.

My other beef with the Grammys, and music in general these days, is what happened to the rock stars?  Ugly, skinny guys who know how to play a guitar???  I can't say I'm in love with any of the music this year.  Johnny Depp was the only guy there who actually looked like a rock star...except for the bad self tanner.  Ok, maybe he's part pirate, part rock star.

Most beautiful goes to Carrie Underwood. She looked better on TV than in this picture.

I did not enjoy her movie screen dress though during her performance.  I prefer when they let her be feisty.

Most annoying goes to Taylor Swift.  I thought she was maturing but now I take that all back.  And I am seriously questioning her singing ability as well.

What were your most memorable moments of the Grammys?

SUPER Super Bowl Commercials

Since my husband's favorite team was playing in the Super Bowl we watched every bit of the game and commercials.  Here are my favorites!

Who doesn't love M&M's and they came through again this year.

I also liked the Etrade commercial.

It All Started With a Big Bang!

My husband and I keep getting hooked on TV shows that are years old and then become obsessed watching them...sometimes hours in a day.  Our current obsession is The Big Bang Theory.  It took watching a few episodes to get to know the characters and now I love them all....especially Sheldon.  It is on practically every day, sometimes up to five times a day, so although we are not watching in order, we have seen quite a few of them already.  I like that it's not a group of ridiculously good looking people pretending to be normal.  They are geeks/nerds and want to stay that way.  True, they like pretty girls (except the asexual Sheldon of course), but so do most boys.

Before The Big Bang Theory it was Bar Rescue which is a show about a guy who tries to help failing bars become profitable.  I especially liked this one because I have been saying for years how I want to be a bartender and own a bar.  I've even thought of using vacation time to go to bartending school just for fun.  Unfortunately this show has not had too many episodes so I got through them all pretty quickly.

Storage Wars was before that, a show about people buying abandoned storage units at auction.  The original which takes place in southern California, not the Texas or New York version.  I think part of the reason we liked it so much was because it takes place in the area we are from so it was fun to hear how they would describe the towns at the beginning of each episode.  Barry was our favorite character, but we eventually gave up on the show because it was the same thing over and over and the characters started being pretty mean to each other.

There have been others before these and I am sure there will be more to come.  Any shows you think I should check out?  I have heard good things about Downtown Abbey so I might try that one next.

Teenage Dream Covers

If imitation is the best form of flattery then Katy Perry should be very flattered.  I've already written about how much I love her Teenage Dream song and video.  Here are a couple videos with completely different interpretations, but equally entertaining!

Glee

The kid who does the funny videos

And the original...

Which is your favorite???

Glee for Me

I think it's time for me to try watching Glee.  I admit I may have thought some negative things about the show based on the premise, but I've recently been watching some of the performances on You Tube and like those so I'm going to give the show a shot.  Hopefully all the parts in between the singing is as entertaining as the songs.

Here are some of my favorites:

Need You Now

Forget You (by Gwyneth Paltrow)

Biggest Loser Letdown

I've been a loyal Biggest Loser watcher for years even though the show hasn't changed much at all.  I love watching people make these huge transformations and changing their lives.  This season the contestants are annoying the heck out of me with all the intentional weight gains.  Two people did it in a row to go home (and they were my favorites because of their sad stories) and then this week people gained to try to send themselves home since they were trying to protect others.  Come on.  Just follow the program, cry every now and then and lose weight and you won't get sent home.  Forget all the game play.  You are a fool to want to give up the opportunity of being able to focus on your weight and health 24/7.  I wish I had that kind of time to devote.

My Brush with the D List

On my recent trip to Vegas, I didn't have any true celebrity sightings, but I did have a couple brushes with the D list...although if there were an E list, that might be a better classification for these people.

While at the Ghost Bar we saw a camera crew shooting some people dancing.  I didn't think much of it at first.  Then we noticed there was one particular person they seemed to be following.  He didn't look familiar at all and was too small to be an athlete.  They were filming him talking to three girls which made us wonder if it was a reality show.  When he walked away from them, I commented to my friend that it couldn't be a TV show or the girls would need to sign a waiver.  About 10 seconds after I said that a man with a clipboard came up to them and had them sign some paperwork.  One of my friends asked someone working there what they were filming and they said, "The Real World".  We later saw them filming another scene with a guy and girl sitting on a a couch trying to look all serious.  It just looked really fake to have all this music and dancing going on and then these bright lights on two people having "serious" conversation.

Another night I was gambling at the MGM at a fun table where we were all talking.  The usual questions went around....where are you staying, where are you from, and what do you do for a living.  One guy stated he was an actor living in LA and another person said to him, somewhat sarcastically, "how is that going for you?".  Actor man said it was going well so the other guy asked if we'd seem him in anything to which he replied he was in a Goodyear commercial and would be a recurring character on the upcoming season of Friday Night Lights.  That last part got my attention!  Not that I was so intrigued by him, but I love that show so I quizzed him on what his character would be doing and then also asked all sorts of questions about the cast.  If anyone is watching the new season, he plays Derek, Julie's TA at college.  He was the only quiet one at the blackjack table and didn't really want to talk to us so I asked my questions and then let it go.

So that's it...my brush with the D list.  My friend on the other hand, was chosen to be a participant in the David Copperfield show and he made her disappear from the stage!

Fall TV Season

I'm excited for the new TV season, but it seems like the new shows I want to watch are all on at the same time or at a time where I'm already taping something else. Last night I had to choose if I wanted Gossip Girl or the new show Lone Star taped so C could watch Monday Night Football (at least his team was playing). I couldn't have 2 things taping because that meant he couldn't watch anything. Our other TV's in the house are out of commission for various reasons, but I don't really watch TV in other rooms anyway.

Shows I currently watch:
Gossip Girl
The Biggest Loser
Cougar Town
Modern Family
Friday Night Lights
Survivor
Weeds
The Big C

New shows I want to try out:
Lone Star
No Ordinary Family
Outsourced
Mike & Molly

What are you watching this fall?  Anything else I should be watching?

New Weeds

The next season of Weeds starts up tomorrow!  I love this show and as you know I watched the first 5 seasons recently on Netflix.  Now I need to sign up for Showtime to get the new season.  If you want to watch it, I recommend watching the old seasons first to get caught up.  I think they can be watched for free on the Showtime's web site because it has evolved quite a bit from how it started.  It went from being funny and quirky to dark and serious.  From what I have read, this season is expected to get back to being funny again, but we'll see.  They have been able to keep the story moving and interesting for 5 seasons so I trust the 6th will be good as well.

Bad TV

The first two days after my surgery I basically just rested on the couch in the living room.  It was also my bedroom post-op since I needed to be elevated and it was easier to do this on the couch.  After two days in the living room, I was done with it and then spent the next two days in the family room watching TV.  There's not much on TV in the middle of the day in the middle of summer so I am ashamed to tell you what I watched!  It didn't take a lot to entertain me for those two days so I will admit to watching Kloe and Kourtney Take Miami.  I even got into it!  Now I like reality TV, but I have always thought of the Kardashian shows as dribble...and they are, but I actually wanted to know what happened next.  Would Kourtney and Scott reconcile?  Would Kloe come back?  Who would take care of Scott after his surgery?  I even felt bad for Scott since he had surgery (in a drunken rage he hit a mirror) and nobody would drive him home or stay with him.  It would have sucked to not have C there for me in the time after my surgery.  Starting on Friday I was feeling up to doing more and was sick of the family room so I  moved onto the deck.  On Sunday I watched the newest episode of K&K Take Miami and couldn't believe how bored I was!  Good thing that phase is over.

American Idol Judges...Who's In and Who's Out???

Randy, J.Lo and Stephen?

I haven't watched American Idol in years. I think I watched the first 2 or 3 seasons and then got bored with it, and that was before Paula got all kooky. I didn't like all the "theme" weeks and wish they would let them sing whatever they wanted to sing to show us who they were.

Anyway, I'm recently fascinated by the shake up of the judges mainly because I think So You Think You Can Dance benefited from changing up their judges. There's been lots of rumors, and this may not be final, but sounds like Randy is staying (boooo) and J.Lo and Stephen Tyler are in to round out the judging panel. No more Ellen or Kara...which I have no comment on because I haven't watched since they were added.

I might actually watch an episode again to see if I like it again. What do you think of these changes?

A Very Special...Locked Up Abroad

I'm a big fan of Locked Up Abroad.  I always root for the person, even though they are doing illegal things, and hope the don't get caught, even though I know they will...since the name of the show is Locked Up Abroad.  I was so excited when I saw a new season was starting a few weeks ago, but the feel of the shows this season are a little different.

First, they spend a lot more time on the story of how they got into the situation and caught and very little time on what it was like to be in the prison.

Second, everybody seems to be learning life lessons, saying they came out of it a better person and learned things they needed to learn, blah blah blah.

Now it feels like every episode should start with a very special episode...

SYTYCD

So You Think You Can Dance, one of my favorite shows, is back for the summer season! I love how when the dancers get put through to the next round and get all excited...and do a little dance. You can tell they are true dancers if they dance when they get excited. There are changes being made to how the contest works this season...I'm happy to see Mia Michaels as a full time judge, but don't like the idea of each contestant dancing with an "all star". I feel like the all start can help carry the routine and the people may vote based on the all star dancing rather than the contestant. Either way, I love the show though. I'm still a little behind on watching so I don't know who the 10 ten are yet...so don't spoil it for me!

Goodbye Lost!

The series finale last night of Lost gave me goose bumps many times throughout the 2.5 hour show and left me weepy at the end. Rarely does a show come through with a good finale, but this was excellent! It was the send off that they deserved and I've been thinking about it since last night. Now that's a good show that keeps someone thinking about it almost 24 hours later. Somehow I feel content and almost happy for how they left since they all seemed so happy. Not what I expected at all!

Cougar Town is Friends Grown Up

I've been watching Cougar Town since it started and think it's the funniest thing on TV in a while. I don't know many other people who like it and most say they like Modern Family, but I can't get into that one. Cougar Town has Courtney Cox as a 40 something recent divorcee in Florida. When the show started she dated some younger hot men, but now this show has turned into an older version of Friends. There are 3 guys and 3 girls who are all mostly neighbors, live in a nice Florida neighborhood, have good jobs and are financially stable. There is the sexual tension between some of them and they talk about relationships between men and women a lot. There is also a teenager that is the son and he is sometimes the voice of reason. Courtney Cox's character's personality is the same as Monica's, except this time she's the girl all the guys want. It's a funny show...my favorite of the season. What's your favorite???

Weeds

When Snowmageddon covered my satellite dish with snow and couldn't get a signal I decided to hook up the Roku and find something to watch. The Roku is a little box that has a wireless connection and streams movies and TV shows from Netflix and Amazon on Demand to the TV. Only the "watch instantly" movies work from Netflix so the choices are limited.

I had Season 1 of the Showtime series Weeds in my Netflix queue so I started watching it...and really like it! It's about a woman whose husband just recently died from a heart attack and she sells weed to support her family in an upper middle class suburban neighborhood. The show also makes fun of suburbia which I find hilarious, even though I happen to love suburban life. The intro and theme song crack me up every time (click here to see it). I embrace it, but know some of it is ridiculous. She refuses to sell to kids, is on the "healthy eating" committee of the PTA, but then sells to all the parents at soccer games and in their minivans. It's considered a dramedy (kinda like Ally McBeal was) where there's lots of humor, but serious stuff too. I'm still on season 1 and there have been 5 seasons so far so this will keep me busy for a while.
